We provide expert assistance to criminal and civil defense lawyers. Our Digital Forensics experts have experience in over 100 cases including murder, sexual molestation, child pornography, fraud, employee wrongdoing, wrongful termination, cyber-stalking, product counterfeiting and plagiarism.

Unlike many forensics experts, we do not only focus on data analysis. We assist the defense from the initial consultation through to court appearance as an expert witness. We collect, preserve, analyze and reconstruct electronic data. The scope of analysis can vary from simple information retrieval to reconstructing a series of events.

Digital Forensics is a branch of forensic science encompassing the recovery and investigation of material found in digital devices, often in relation to computer crime. The term was originally used as a synonym to computer forensics but has expanded to cover other devices capable of storing digital data. The science of digital forensics is divided into several sub-branches: computer forensics, network forensics, database forensics and mobile device forensics.

Electronic information is different from paper because of its intangible form, quantity, transience and persistence. Electronic information is usually accompanied by metadata not found in paper documents which can play an important part as evidence (for example the date and time a document was written could be useful in a copyright case). The preservation of metadata involves special challenges.

Digital Forensic investigations are much broader in scope than other areas of forensic analysis where the usual aim is to provide answers to a series of simpler questions.

Digital Forensic investigations often take one of three forms:

As well as identifying direct evidence of a crime, Digital Forensics can be used to attribute evidence to specific suspects, confirm alibis or statements, determine intent, identify sources (for example in copyright cases) or authenticate documents.

At INSA our expertise is in Digital Forensics. We do not take sides. We uncover the truth which in most cases results in resolution before the trial starts.

Our value to you, as a lawyer or individual, is our demonstrated ability to see the overall picture, our knowing where to find answers and our ability to educate you, your co-counsel, your client, the judge, or even the opposing counsel, as to what the issues are and how the evidence affects the case. From other experts to IT professionals to clients to lawyers, everyone has to understand the subject matter and that’s where we can be of most help to you.

We tie the bits and bytes to reality, and make them easily understandable.
